"Carnavas"
Silversun Pickups
Dangerbird Records 2006
So it's been far too long since I have posted anything here, which may be due to the whole having a job thing but I have been getting some new music (although most of the new music out there is subpar) so I bring you this gem that was released in July. "Carnavas" is the first full album from California Rockers the Silversun Pickups. And it is a good first effort. The band sounds kind of like if the Smashing Pumpkins and the Pixies got a surf rock band together. The drums are heavy, the guitars are distorted, and the singer's voice is grainy but the tunes rock and can even have some catchy hooks.
The album opens with the semi-sleepy "Melatonin" but quickly gets into the groove with the second track "Well Thought Out Twinkles," which I guarantee will get caught in your head and make you want to dance spastically in the streets. The rest of the album features the dark tones that evoke images of the swelling chaotic masses in a dark club, like a scene from a movie where the main characters pass through the tumultuous crowds on the way to execute someone in the bathrooms.
Anyhow, if you want to get a good feel for the SIlversun Pickups, I suggest you check out "Lazy Eye", which gets under your skin and forces you to dance along to the song, or the aforementioned "Twinkles." You won't be disappointed that you did.
18/20 rating for "Carnavas"
